Our Story

About a decade ago, when visiting my hometown, I suddenly felt arms wrap tightly around me. I turned to see the face of a large, tall, heavily bearded man who I finally recognized. He looked disheveled and exhausted since the last time I had seen him. He spoke rapidly and loudly, asking if he could join me on my plane ride back to Israel.

When I questioned him about his urgency, he responded that he was the Messiah. He spoke incoherently, breathless and crying, and people around him fearfully backed off and slipped into their cars. Over the next several hours, I refused to leave his side, took him to the hospital, and advocated for him. This was my intense introduction to mental illness.

Fast forward several years, after becoming a rabbi, I was asked to fill in for a colleague, teaching Torah to a young man who lived with mental illness. His supportive family by his side, I was inspired by their love and devotion. I continued learning with the young man for years to follow and grew close to his family. I became familiar with the plight of a family supporting a young adult with mental illness and I found myself wanting to deeply serve.

Soon after, I completed my masters in Health Administration. With my new degree, background in business, rabbinic scholarship, and experience, I set out to create a supportive system for these families and their children.

Bridge the Gap is named for the helping hand we offer young people and their families. We aim to relieve families of the daily responsibility and create a soft place to land for young adults who want to flourish. We offer guidance, accountability, connection, and skills to these young people as they integrate into the world successfully.
